Little has been written about Romania’s role as Nazi Germany’s ally during World War II. Romania joined the Tripartite Pact on November 23, 1940 as a sovereign state, participated in the attack on the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941 as an equal partner of Germany, and was never occupied by the Wehrmacht. After 1945, the Communist regime barred access to research into the years 1941-1944 and denied recognition or commemoration of Romanian war dead on the Eastern Front.
