ABSTRACT
The effort to achieve nuclear disarmament cannot be understood without providing an historical perspective going back to the pre-nuclear Age, at least to the formative years of the late 1930s. The US initiative to develop nuclear weapons emerged from the tensions in Europe that would lead to the Second World War, mainly from concerns about the potential of the Nazi-controlled German government to harness the power of the atom for destructive purposes.
