ABSTRACT

The chapter is divided into three sections. The fi rst section examines the concept of political regime and relates this concept to regime analysis especially with regard to democratic transition and consolidation. It provides a framework that guides the main arguments of the chapter. The second looks at political developments and succession politics in postindependence Lesotho, providing the background information required to gain a clear depiction of regime dynamics in the country. The third section analyzes and explains regime dynamics in Lesotho, primarily focusing on the behavioral dimensions of the concept of political regime and democratic consolidation. The conclusion provides recommendations on how key political actors can institutionalize democratic consolidation and democracy in Lesotho and Africa in general.
