ABSTRACT
In Chapter 1, Murray helps us understand the ecology of leadership, the study of how leaders help individuals and organizations work together by exploring two intersecting dimensions of leadership in English language teaching: the fact that change is inevitable and that English language teaching occurs in varied cultural contexts that create varied cultural experiences and expectations for the individuals involved. In order to respond to these intersecting dimensions, Murray builds on the concept of transformational leadership in English language teaching.Transformational leadership, sometimes known as charismatic or visionary leadership, is a description of leadership that is open and responsive to the needs of both the organizational system and the individuals within the organization. The key element in transformational leadership is that effective leaders focus on learning. In other words, leadership is committed to learning and learning about leadership.
