ABSTRACT

The Esquipulas I and II peace agreements launched a process of democratization in Central America in a context of significant optimism regarding the region’s political and socio-economic future. Unfortunately, as has been highlighted by Torres-Rivas (2011) and other authors (Caldentey 2012; Martí i Puig 2009), the revolutionary process that brought about the conflicts did not result in radical changes in Central America’s political and economic structures (see also Chapter 1 in this volume).
