Furthermore, scientific inquiry has made enormous contributions to un­ derstanding and predicting phenomena in the physical world and to the development of technology based on these understandings . Indeed, so much progress has been made that many scientists believe science is com­ ing to an "end"; that is, they believe that the most significant discoveries have already been made (e .g. , determining that all chemical reactions can be understood in terms of quantum mechanics) or that, in some fields (e .g . , theoretical physics) , scientific discovery has reached the limits of hu­ man understanding (Horgan, 1996) .
