ABSTRACT

Doschoolsdowhattheyaresupposedto?Accordingtosociologicalstructurefunctionalistictheories,schoolsaswellasuniversitieshavetofulfilseveral functionsforthesocietyandfortheindividual.Withinthisframework,two functionsoftheschoolarequalificationandintegration-enculturation(cf.Fend, 1980;Parsons,1959).Thesefunctionsarerelatedtolearningthattakesplacein school.Schoolinstructionshouldteachstudentsimportantfactsandskillsthat arenecessaryforlaterworkinglife.Ideally,theproverbNonscholaesedvitae discimus("Wedonotlearnforschool,butforlife")shouldbetrueinorderto adequatelyqualifystudents.
