ABSTRACT

Mr. Scranton records his family's daily television viewing in a diary-he is part of a Nielsen family. Mrs. Glomer turns on the television and then punches a code number into a "peoplemeter" device-she is part of an Arbitron family. When Jimmy turns on the TV, he presses buttons on a machine, sees his name on the screen and knows that a heat sensor is scanning the room for his presence-he is part of a Percy family. Each of these family members is participating in the collection of data to answer the question of which TV programs are being received (and presumably viewed) in their homes.
