ABSTRACT

As an artist/teacher, you are educating young people at a time when it is less possible than ever to insulate them from complex issues of national and global significance. Digital technologies such as the internet, e-networking groups and mobile phones means that serious issues constantly permeate young people’s worlds – issues such as the recent increase in the UK of brutal murders of teenagers by teenagers, struggles over race and immigration, chronic eating disorders, or wars, climate change and credit crunches. Indeed, if you hope to equip young people to take care of each other and the future, you will be actively and optimistically fostering a rolling discussion on many such issues. After all, aren’t you educating young ‘citizens’?
