ABSTRACT

According to the Islamic tradition, the Prophet Muh. ammad received revelations, the Qur a¯n, in seventh-century Arabia. Initially, this text was taught to learners through processes of oral recitation and memory recall. Students committed to memory written accounts of how Muh. ammad received this sacred revelation and used it to guide the nascent community of Muslims. Therefore, the origins of education in Islam involved proper recitation and writing of scripture in order to more fully understand the actions of the Prophet. Islamic education, at its heart, was intertwined with Qur anic revelations. These revelations themselves endorsed education for believers.
