ABSTRACT
McCarty Holsaple McCarty, Inc. is an architecture and interior design firm located in downtown Knoxville, Tennessee. In the original office layout, there was a desire to create an open studio appearance, fostering team communication, visual unity, and work energy. Workstations are organized into two distinct rows, with a built-in hierarchy of station sizes. The main spine of workstations proceeds from the front end building facade to the river view facade along the studio spaces’ central axis. A secondary visual axis is expressed from the elevator entry lobby to an open conference area. The perimeter of the open studio space has pockets of directors offices and conference areas, which are explicitly organized into a visually ordered bay system. This composition is illustrated in the regular arrangement of architectural columns, recessed glass walls, and projected solid partitions. Director’s offices remain visually open with the use of full height semi-frosted glass partitions.
