ABSTRACT

The genus Nanophyetus comprises two trematode species (Nanophyetus salmincola and Nanophyetus schikhobalowi) that are parasites of salmons in the coast of the U.S. Pacific Northwest, Canada, and East Siberia, where human cases of Nanophyetus infection (nanophyetiasis or fish flu) have been documented after ingestion of raw or inadequately cooked salmon meat containing the parasites. In addition, N. salmincola has been shown to act as a carrier for gram-negative bacterium Neorickettsia helminthoeca, which causes salmon poisoning disease (SPD) in canids.
