ABSTRACT

Bell’s palsy is a lower motor neuron weakness of the facial (7th cranial) nerve the aetiology of which is unknown. A viral cause is currently favoured based upon the isolation of herpes simplex virus-1 genome from the facial nerve endoneurial fluid of sufferers. 1 A recent study revealed the incidence of Bell’s palsy to be 37.5/100,000 person-years. 2
