ABSTRACT

Radiation hardening by design (RHBD) is a concept of producing microelectronic integrated circuits (ICs) on standard commercial fabrication processes by applying intelligent transistor designs that are known to mitigate radiation effects. RHBD is related to other approaches to fabricating radiation-tolerant ICs, radiation hardening by process (RHBP), or radiation hardening by serendipity (RHBS). RHBP applies nonstandard process steps to mitigate radiation effects, though RHBD techniques may be applied to further mitigate radiation effects. RHBS is the concept of producing ICs without any thought put into radiation mitigation and the resulting tolerance is what the commercial process inherently provides.
