ABSTRACT
Forty years of Escherichia coli K12 genetics has established bacterial genetics as an essential component of microbiological studies. The sophisticated and extensive knowledge of this organism has been essential for the establishment and success of molecular biology and recombinant DNA technology. An important aspect of this has been to demonstrate to microbiologists and biochemists the value of genetic analysis as a means to the solution of a wide variety of biological problems.
