This chapter is concerned with the present and historical uses and methods of producing hydrogen from fossil fuels. Emphasis will be placed on current commercial processes. However, partial oxidation of residual fractions will also be discussed, as future hydrogen production will rely extensively on the succesful conversion of heavier feedstocks. Older methods which utilize coal or coke will also be discussed since they appear to have potential as gaseous and liquid hydrocarbons become scarce and more expensive.
