ABSTRACT

Transsexual people are now part of our social environment. Hormonal and surgical reassignments are regularly sought, and it is estimated that in the major centres in the UK, around 300 genital reconstructions are performed annually. Social attitudes have changed considerably since the early 1990s, when transsexual people first started to campaign for their rights to ‘respect and equality’. Now many people have friends, neighbours and work colleagues who are transsexual people.
