ABSTRACT
The larynx is a complex structure, and its principal function is to protect the airway during swallowing. In humans the larynx is uniquely designed also to play a pivotal role in communication through speech. To serve these functions the larynx possesses some of the fastest muscles in the body, and is richly supplied with both sensory and motor nerves.
