ABSTRACT

Bereavement is a profound but common human experience. It usually refers to the loss of a loved one and it is linked to the experience of other deeply felt losses, e.g. old age, disability, trauma. Generally, our society seems to delude us into thinking that everyday life in this world is safe and predictable. Although deep down we have a dim awareness of the finite nature of our lives, we tend to live as if this was not so; as if we have limitless time ahead in which to appreciate, and work on, our close relationships.
