It is characterized by the direction of an electric field of light. In a planar waveguide, it is defined as TE (Transverse Electric) and TM (Transverse Magnetic) as shown in Figure 1 [1,2]. Sometimes the polarization is expressed as s-wave and p-wave when it is incident to a plane surface as shown in Figure 2. When electrified, the direction and the amplitude changes from time to time and is called elliptically polarized light having angular momentum.
