ABSTRACT

Sexual dysfunction is an inability to achieve a normal sexual intercourse, including premature ejaculation, retrograded, retarded or inhibited ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, arousal difficulties (reduced libido), compulsive sexual behavior, orgasmic disorder and failure of detumescence. It is increasing world wide due to etiological factors and aging. Men and women have since ages been curious to improve, revive and maintain their sexual efficiency, and aphrodisiacs substances are employed for this purpose (Patel et al., 2011). An aphrodisiac is defined as any food or drug that arouses the sexual instinct, induces venereal desire and increases pleasure and 164performance. This word is derived from ‘Aphrodite’ the Greek goddess of love and these substances are derived from plants, animals or minerals and since time immemorial they have been the passion of man. Presently, the aphrodisiac substances are used to treat sexual dysfunction or having sexual activity enhancing power. Sexual desire is controlled and regulated by the central nervous system which integrates tactile, olfactory, auditory, and mental stimuli. The aphrodisiac drugs act by altering the level of specific neurotransmitters or specific sex hormone into the body. Mostly act through alteration in testosterone concentration in the body but other effective in both sexes (Malviya et al., 2011)
