ABSTRACT

The pharmaceutical, functional food, and nutraceutical industries have been tremendously instrumental in the last two decades in drug development, economic growth, and health promotion. The food that we eat is our primary source of nutrition. Sometimes, due to various factors such as lifestyle changes, eating habits, and stress, we are unable to get all the nutrition our bodies require. People today have become increasingly health conscious. In an effort to achieve balanced nutrition, they consume dietary supplements, enriched products, and nutraceuticals. This has led to the meteoric rise of the nutraceutical and functional food industries. Consumers are also weary of expensive medical treatments (Das et al., 2012). Nutraceuticals and functional foods are attractive alternatives.
