ABSTRACT

The Department of Defense (DoD) has been using analytics for a long time, probably as long as there has been human conflict (see Hill & Miller, 2017 for a similar discussion on military simulation). The profession of operations research provides the DoD its primary analytic workforce and arguably grew out of preparations for World War II (WWII) and subsequent efforts during the war (Miser, 2000). Tasha Inniss is quoted as stating, “Analytics can be thought of as an umbrella term to describe all quantitative decision-making” (Samuelson, 2018).
