ABSTRACT

Incidence of CHD The incidence of CHD is determined accurately only if ascertainment of the anomalies is complete. Two barriers exist. Some CHD causes death in the first few days after birth. A specific diagnosis might not have been made by the time of death, and without an autopsy examination, the incidence of these serious malformations might be seriously underestimated.1 Conversely, children with minimal pulmonic stenosis or small atrial or ventricular septal defects might never be included in any cardiologist’s practice so that their frequency is also underestimated.
