ABSTRACT
Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in preterm newborns. About 30% to 50% of preterm babies who require surgery for NEC do not survive. Despite 6 decades of research, our understanding of the causation of NEC has not progressed enough to improve outcomes, especially for surgical NEC.
