ABSTRACT

The chapter provides a discussion on the energy and environmental performance of small combustion installations (SCIs) fueled with solid fuels. Special attention is given to the use of solid biofuels, namely wood and straw. The nontechnical, regulatory measures, as well as technical abatement means for reducing emissions, mainly of particulate matter (PM), are described. The chapter presents up to date requirements as set by relevant EU directives, as well as testing standards developed by technical committees, covering the range of fuels and appliances producing useful heat. Finally, the primary and secondary measures for reducing environmental impacts of solid fuel SCIs are discussed.
