ABSTRACT
Conventional controlled release formulations are designed to deliver drugs at a predetermined, preferably constant rate. Only under special circumstances can these formulations be modified to provide variable-rate delivery. 1,2 Some clinical situations, however, necessitate either external control of the drug delivery rate and/or volumes of drug that are beyond the capabilities of existing controlled release formulations. Implantable drug delivery pumps have been devised to meet these situations.
