ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we will discuss methods, tools, and the mindset that may help to get closer to the Holy Grail of systemic innovation. A major challenge of innovation is that the organization inherently enters new territory, which implies that it does not know the lay of the land. Innovation brings uncertainty and unknowns. In today’s world, we expand this notion further in VUCA, an acronym standing for volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. The volatility relates to the fast pace in society and technology. Complexity stems from the integration of systems and organizations, resulting in many emerging dependencies and interactions. The human and organizational context with a wide variation of properties as emotional, cultural, social, and political brings ambiguity.
