ABSTRACT
In this chapter, the historical development of irrigation systems in the United States is analyzed by looking at governmental involvement and at U.S. water law. The next section presents the three levels of American irrigation organization and examines their relationship to each other. It includes suggestions for promoting efficiency and incentives for participation. The final section is a discussion of the major contemporary problems facing irrigated agriculture in the nation and includes some potential solutions for dealing with these problems.
