ABSTRACT
The rate at which a bumble bee colony can grow is limited by the food supplies that the workers can bring into the colony (Fig. 10-1). The workers' sole activity when in the field is to forage; they do not alter their movements for functions other than those required to harvest food. One might expect, therefore, that they forage "optimally" -- that their movements are dictated primarily to enhance the rate of food intake.
