ABSTRACT

We raise about one-fourth of the steers that we background; the remainder are purchased within a one-hundred mile radius of the farm. We try to select a crossbred calf weighing between 300 lb and 400 lb. We are not too concerned about the kind of cross. We like for the calf to have good conformation and hope that it is healthy. We choose a calf because of the bone structure, length, and to some extent, the nature of the calf.
