ABSTRACT
Can biotechnology research and development help increase the efficiency of meat production and help maintain present abundance of food at relatively low prices? This paper argues that even small increases in biological efficiency of production may be difficult and limited, but small ruminants offer one avenue where production ceilings remain quite distant.
