The administration of narcotics into the subarachnoid (intrathecal) or the epidural space is gaining fairly widespread acceptance for the production of pain relief in adult patients. To some extent, this parallels the apparent rekindling of interest in the use of regional anesthesia. 102 The increased awareness and use of such techniques has resulted from a recognized need for more efficient intra- and postoperative analgesia.
