ABSTRACT
The study of interacting dynamic systems has traditionally been approached from a detailed analysis and modelling of the interconnections and interactions amongst the system’s component parts. There are many complex systems, however, where this approach has not been particularly productive, especially in those which comprise natural or ecological phenomena such as the growth of natural organisms, the spread of fire and the emergence of weather patterns.
