ABSTRACT
As shown in the previous chapter, among the various classes of pesticides, herbicides are the compounds of major concern for groundwater. The frequency of herbicide findings and the relevance of groundwater contamination due to these products, at least in developed countries, impose a fundamental question. Are herbicides really needed, and is the large amount of herbicide used for agricultural and nonagricultural purposes really justified?
