ABSTRACT

Circulation services in public libraries are pivotal to the success of library services. The circulation desk is where library service typically begins and ends for library patrons (users). Patrons come into the library and ask for directions at the circulation desk, to apply for library membership in the form of a library card, and to learn library policy information regarding circulation of materials, computer use, programming confirmations, and more. After receiving reference services from the librarian, patrons go back to the circulation desk to check out materials, pay fines, learn of library programs, and status of requests.

Throughout the history of public libraries in America, circulation areas have been in tune with the technological trends of the day. From due date cards to keypunch operating machines to self-check-out modalities, circulation desks have always been and continue to be the focal point for library patrons to learn the value of the library.
