ABSTRACT
An overview of the sociology of the information disciplines is presented. The information disciplines are described and linked to the development of the social formation that sociologists refer to as “modernity.” Development of several information disciplines is traced in relation to the phases of capitalism, the growth of the modern university, and the growth of information itself.
