ABSTRACT
The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) is one of 11 divisions of the American Library Association (ALA). Its members are drawn from the ranks of children’s and school librarians, library educators, commercial vendors, and representatives of the children’s book publishing community. Starting as the Club of Children’s Librarians in 1900, it now boasts more than 4000 members and a broad-based program of activities focusing on advocacy, education, and partnerships. While best known outside of the library community for its implementation of the Newbery and Caldecott awards for distinguished contributions to American children’s literature, the Association today engages in many activities and initiatives aimed at improving library services for children through the identification and promotion of best practices, the professional development of its members, and a strong program of advocacy.
