ABSTRACT

One of the objectives of the information disciplines is to study the universe of recorded information—that is, to study the documentary products of domains of human activity—and to come to understand such bodies of literature as social and historical phenomena in and of themselves. Beatty discusses the rich history of medical literature from ancient times to the mid-twentieth century. Forms of bibliographic control, such as Index Medicus, are also covered.
