ABSTRACT
Although the technologies that underpin digital imaging have been in development for a surprisingly long time, recent developments in computing and networking technologies mean that digital images have recently become the dominant means to create and share photographic material. The Library and Archive sector were early adopters of these technologies, with many and various digitization projects being undertaken to produce digital images of important holdings, which is now an expected practice across the heritage sector. Best practice guidelines have been produced to provide technical and managerial recommendations for those wishing to undertake digitization projects. However, due to the increase in digital images in general society, the information professional also has role in educating industry and the public regarding issues in the long-term preservation of this medium, and we are now at a juncture where cultural and heritage institutions have to explore how best to interact with the general public effectively via digital images.
